The Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services now includes the use of anti-psychotic medications in the ratings for all nursing homes.
Although the use of anti-psychotic medications can be necessary to treat some residents, frequently nursing homes (especially short-staffed homes) use anti-psychotic medications as a way to reduce the ability of the residents to request assistance. By overusing these medications, the nursing homes reduce their staffing levels, but also lower the quality of life for their residents.
